| if you going to drive like an idiot do it where there aren't any people around. Here in California street racing is a misdemeanor crime which means the officer has discretion in enforcing the law. An example would be a person street racing in heavy traffic through a school zone is going to have a lesser chance of getting off than somebody racing at 3am when no one is around on the outskirts of town. When your driving like an idiot around bystanders it shows a blatant disregard for your safety and the safety of others. A good officer will take into account the "totality of the circumstances" and decide on that if this person needs to go to jail. Street racing has been a serious problem. Innocent people have been killed. The reason it is CRIMINAL is because of that fact. Do you really think that if everyone got a slap on the wrist that the problem would go away? I personally love racing and I am a police officer. However I'm sorry if you drive like an idiot through my town where my family lives you will go to jail and I will take your car. My advise to anyone who wants to street race is to do it outside of any city limits and in an area where no one is around.
